Tips for Spotting Whales

Choose the right time: Early mornings often offer calmer, glass-like sea conditions, making it easier to spot whales. Late afternoons can also be rewarding, particularly when increased wind activity brings more movement to the ocean.

Know what to look for: Keep an eye out for the distinctive vertical spray of a whale’s blow, a large disturbance or “footprint” on the water’s surface, as well as spectacular breaches, tail-slaps and other displays of activity.

Respect the whales: Land-based viewing is free and unrestricted. Licensed boat-based operators are required to maintain a safe distance of at least 300 metres from the animals, helping to minimise disturbance and protect these magnificent creatures.

Bring your binoculars, find a comfortable viewpoint and enjoy one of the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast’s most memorable seasonal spectacles.
